Environmentalists and the birds win. Starting December 11th, there will be a two-year moratorium on the catch of horseshoe crabs. DNREC Secretary John Hughes made the decision which brings the First State in line with New Jersey’s similar ban. It’s an effort to protect the crab population – and the Red Knot shore bird which is declining in numbers and feeds on the crab eggs. Commercial fishermen use the crabs as bait – and the horseshoe crab is used for medical research.
