Determined crooks went to great lengths to get what they wanted. Burglars hit two businesses, but they weren’t after cash. They broke through steel-reinforced walls in the businesses. One break-in happened Monday night at a vacant office next a grocery. One suspect cut themselves as they bashed their way into the store. “You see they tried to get up through the ceiling and they couldn’t so they came down and broke through here,” said Mike Mansberry, a subcontractor. “They’re actually punching a hole in the wall to make entry into other businesses,” said Columbia Police Lt. Mickey Jones. It’s happened more than once. Police think the same burglars burrowed through a sidewall and window at a Shoney’s Friday. It was after the restaurant was closed. No cash was on the premises. But the crooks escaped with three crates of food: one crate of boiled shrimp, one full of rib eyes and the other with T-bone steaks. “Maybe two guys, you had a heavy guy doing the hammering and the skinny guy went through the hole there,” Mansberry said. Police think at least one person entered the store after hours. The registers were empty. It took them two hours to bust in but an alarm sounded after they entered. They only had 10 seconds to flee. They kicked out the glass in the front door and escaped.
