Ohio - A Lorain fisherman is boasting an unusual catch in Lake Erie. Sea wildlife experts are calling the creature an aquatic invader that could pose a threat to Lake Erie. Fishing is more than a chore for Rick Patterson. He does it to enjoy the fresh air and the outdoors. It’s his daily dose of beauty. There are days when he doesn’t catch a single fish. But sometimes he catches a Chinese Mitten Crab. This spiky species should only be found in coastal estuaries of Asia. So when it landed in Rick’s palm, he snapped photos, then called in a sea life expert. The expert labeled the crab a Lake Erie invader. There’s no predator in the lake that will attack this crab. So how did this foreign crab get here? Here’s what fisherman Rick thinks. Not long ago, over by the Lorain lighthouse he saw a Chinese freighter dump its ballast. Experts say it could damage embankments with its burrowing nature or clog drainage systems. The crab will be added to Ohio State’s collection of aquatic species at a research lab on Put In Bay.
