A crab catcher said yesterday he used cocaine to help ease the pain from the “bites” of crabs he hunted. Stephen Jagroop of Woodland, San Francique, told magistrate Melville Daniel in the San Fernando Second Court that he caught crabs for a living. He said he used cocaine because he felt no pain when a crab attacked him whenever he put his hands into a crab hole. Jagroop said the effects of the cocaine lasted half an hour and he tried to catch as many crabs as he could before the effect wore off. Jagroop was charged with possession of cocaine and for having a device for using it. He was held around 5 p.m. last Sunday along Gulf View, San Fernando. He was fined $2,000 for having the illegal drug and $1,000 for the device. Jagroop said he did not have all the money and begged Daniel for a chance to pay in part. “This is not Courts or Standards, this is the Magistrates’ Court,” Daniel said. “Did you see a sign outside saying one dollar down? I can’t give you terms,” he added. Then he gave Jagroop one month to pay the fine.
