Lobster Boat the Target of Arson

On Tuesday Biddeford Police continued investigating the attempted arson of a lobster boat that happened Monday morning. The boat, called the West Wind, is owned by Randall Desmarais of Biddeford and was moored in Biddeford Pool. Biddeford Police Communications Director JoAnne Fisk said at about 9:40 a.m. on Monday the police received a call from Desmarais saying he had found a suspicious propane tank in the cuddy area of the 28-foot lobster boat, which was moored about 150 feet offshore. The cuddy area is a small room or cabin located at the bow or stern of a small boat. Fisk said Desmarais had not left the propane tank there himself. After viewing the tank, Biddeford Police contacted the State Fire Marshal’s office, which sent an investigator. Fisk said the fire marshal’s office ruled the incident as an attempted arson. The Biddeford Police also contacted the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, which turned the incident back over to the local police, according to Fisk. Fisk said Biddeford Police have “some evidence” in the case but would not say what police were able to collect on the scene yesterday. The area surrounding the lobster boat, which was moored near the Biddeford Yacht Club, was secured and no one was allowed in or out for about three hours Monday morning, Fisk said. As far as Fisk knows, the West Wind is operational today and the yacht club is back in business.
