The city of Rockland is trimming its tree for the holiday season in a way only a fishing community can. The tree is made out of 143 lobster traps. And it will be decorated by buoys donated by local fishermen. Members of the Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Dowtown Merchants Alliance built the tree Saturday. When it’s finished it will be 22 rows high and topped by a 4-foot lobster. “It’s a great way for people of Rockland and Thomaston to celebrate their heritage of fishing and lobstering and the entire 9 yards. It’s a great thing for people to come here and look at. It’s a phenomenal piece of architecture, actually,” said Joe Catalano of the Chamber of Commerce. This year’s lobster trap tree will be lit on Friday at 6:00 PM.
