New Hunters of Farmed Salmon?

Jelly Fish
Fears are growing that the Jellyfish attack, which killed around 150,000 young salmon in a fish farm, could be the first of many. Scientists fear that the problem could get worse as global warming increases the number of jellyfish now being spotted in the Irish Sea. The attack on the fish farm in Glenarm Bay, off Country Antrim, Northern Ireland, in November, was, according to observers, like something out of a science fiction film. Water around the salmon cages began giving off a purple glow as the jellyfish, so small they floated through the mesh of the cages, began stinging the fish with their tentacles. An estimated $1 million worth of fish was wiped out. Swansea University marine biologist Jon Houghton, commenting on the jellyfish phenomena, told the Western Mail newspaper: “The trouble is that we know so little about these jellyfish… until recently they were viewed as just bags of water that had little or no impact on our ecosystem.” The Jellyfish’s normal habitat is the sea, although some can survive in some fresh waters.
