New York Thefts Target Lobster Boats

Lobster Boat

A string of thefts at York Harbor has police officers wondering what sort of criminal is at work. The most recent incident was reported at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 14. The owner of a boat at York Harbor said someone had gone below deck and thrown things around, but didn’t take expensive tools he had out. Instead, the burglar stole a sweat shirt and a pair of coveralls, for a total estimated value of $50. “I think if they could take something that’s worth money and instead they take a sweat shirt that smells like lobster, somethings going on,” said Sgt. Gary Finley of the York Police Department. Two similar incidents were reported on Feb. 7 and 9. In the first theft, several valuable items were taken, including foul weather gear, boots, gloves and aprons, for an estimated total value of $860. The theft reported Feb. 9, however, also involved a sweat shirt being taken, as well as some life vests, for an estimated loss of $185. Finley said the latest victim believes the culprit is just trying to anger lobster men. The department is investigating.
