Shrimp Truck Crashes

Commuters on Interstate 12 south of Covington ran into trouble coming and going Monday because of an overturned truck filled with frozen shrimp. traffic was snarled in both directions during morning and evening rush hours as workers tried to clear the overturned 18-wheeler, which came to rest alongside the eastbound lanes just east of the Tchefuncte River bridge. Ivan Selyukov of Lawrenceville, Ga., told State Police that he swerved and lost control of the JBP Transportation truck after the sun interfered with his vision, making it difficult to tell how far he was from the car in front of him, State Police Sgt. Russell Mayfield said The 7:25 a.m. accident forced the closure of one eastbound lane, creating a miles-long traffic jam throughout the day. Traffic on the westbound side also was backed up, apparently because of motorists slowing down to gawk at the accident. Workers spent all day unloading about 40,000 pounds of Chinese shrimp so that the truck could be turned upright. The traffic lane was reopened at about 5:45 p.m. The slow-going on I-12 sent frustrated motorists scrambling for other routes, including Louisiana 21 into Covington, where roads were jammed all day. The interstate backup spawned a minor three-car crash near Louisiana 1077, Mayfield said. The crash resulted in minor injuries, and all the motorists involved declined medical help at the scene, he said. State Police issued Selyukov, 5, a citation for careless driving.
