Students Attempt to Restore Lobsters to New York Waters

Students from Bridgeport’s city’s Aquaculture School are set to play a large role in state efforts to rebuild Long Island Sound’s lobster population. As many as 20 Aquaculture students — along with counterparts from the Sound School in New Haven and Ella Grasso Technical High School in Groton — were to begin clipping the tails of female lobsters with “v-notches” this month. In the two years it takes for the quarter-inch notch to grow out, the lobsters would be protected from harvesting, allowing them to produce thousands of eggs. Officials say November is a prime time to start the state-funded program since the waters get colder and lobster move more freely.
