Winn Dixie Charged With Illegal Lobster Sales

spiny
Supermarket chain Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. was charged earlier this year with illegal possession, transportation and sale of undersized spiny lobster. According to a statement made by the U.S Attorney’s Office in Miami Florida, the company faces possible fines and probation of up to five years. The charges come as the Jacksonville-based chain is working to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by this fall.In 2002 Winn-Dixie sold undersized spiny lobster in Miami stores and elsewhere when it was aware of the fact that the transactions were illegal under Florida law. Florida law requires that the lobsters, which live in waters from Florida to Brazil, have a minimum tail length of 5.5 inches before they are harvested. It was unclear how many undersized lobsters were sold.
